Exemption Policy

Stockdale High School

December 12, 2011

Board Policy EIAA(LOCAL)

MIDTERM AND FINAL EXAMS Each instructional department (defined as two or more teachers teaching the same subject) shall determine whether teachers in that department shall be required to give midterm and final exams. If midterms or final exams are required, the department shall decide whether students shall be permitted to earn exemptions from those exams.
EXEMPTIONS

If a department decides to allow exemptions from required mid-term or final exams, any student in grades 9-12 shall be exempt from the midterm and final exams in a course for which the student meets the following conditions, subject to the limits established in this policy:

  1. No more than three absences (excused or unexcused) from the class.
  1. A cumulative grade average of 85 or higher for all applicable grading periods of the course.
  1. No unexcused tardies to the class.
  1. No discipline referrals to the office from the class.

A total of three discipline referrals to the office shall make the student ineligible for an exam exemption in any course.

LIMITS

A student meeting these criteria in grade 9 shall be granted no more than one exemption per semester from a midterm exam and no more than one exemption per semester from a final exam.

A student meeting these criteria in grade 10 shall be granted no more than two exemptions per semester from midterm exams and no more than two exemptions per semester from final exams.

There shall be no limit on the number of exams from which a student meeting these criteria in grade 11 or in grade 12 may earn exemption.

EXCEPTIONS Absences for religious holy days or for documented health care appointments for which a student has made up the required work shall not be counted as absences for the purpose of determining exemptions under this policy.
